Same Old Paradise, 1987
Alexis Smith belongs to a generation of artists who, in the late 1970s, were called L.A.’s Young Romantics. Smith made use of text combined with images from popular culture in order to explore the fabricated narratives of L.A.’s entertainment and celebrity culture. Same Old Paradise is made up of eight collages consisting of advertising images, photographs and film posters. Texts by American authors such as John Dos Passos, Raymond Chandler and Jack Kerouac are inscribed on the motifs. The images all evoke a nostalgic “Americana” aesthetic, and together with the accompanying texts they create fragments of a road trip narrative. In this work Smith explores the road trip as a classic American genre. A personal narrative about American car culture emerges as the result of the combination of existing literary descriptions and found image material.
