Plank Piece I-II, 1990
In the work Plank Piece Ray uses his own body to stage performative sculptures with a plank. This act exemplifies the performative trend that marked art in L.A. during the late 1970s, which Ray explored and applied to a sculptural mode of thought. Ray’s sculptures can be viewed as a further development of the legacy of minimalism, and Plank Piece can be interpreted as a reference to California’s West-Coast minimalism and John McCracken’s Planks. Ray’s “performative sculpture” shows how the physical, corporeal activity merges with explorations of what a sculpture is.
