Born 1981, USA. Lives and works in New York.
The American artist Dan Attoe is recognized for his small, quirky paintings and his neon sculptures.
His paintings are executed in a figurative style, inspired by cartoons and Americana culture. The complex narratives that unfold in the paintings are often described as psycho-dramas and they depict scenes of intense emotional character such as car crashes, homicides scenes, UFO landings or other absurd situations. Attoe’s use of neon is inspired by the gleaming advertising signage that decorates dodgy beer joints in the American Midwest. His neon sculptures are composed of line drawings of figures which express strange statements like "You've have had it way too easy, ''We are just complicated animals" and "Emotional problems don’t mean shit". These almost hallucinatory figures and their existential pronouncements generates a sense of both darkness and comedy that is a characteristic feature in Attoe’s oeuvre.
