Born 1968, Germany. Lives and works in Berlin and London.
Through his pictures that capture the essence of the moment, Wolfgang Tillmans came to the art world’s attention in the early 1990s.
His works embrace the artist’s own life, observations of his environments and engages the history of the photographic medium. For many years, his pictures captured figurative subjects through portraits, landscapes and still lives. However, in recent years Tillmans has begun exploring abstraction in pictures produced directly in the darkroom, usually without a camera. Through his research, Tillmans examines the definitions and possibilities of photography.
